The University of Manitoba Panhellenic Association is the co-ordinating body of the 3 National Panhellenic Conference women's fraternities chartered at the University of Manitoba. As members of NPC, we are also part of NPC's Mid-American Greek Council Association that represents all the Panhellenics in our region.

Women's fraternities have been at U of M since 1925, and U of M/W Panhellenic will be celebrating 75 years of women's Greek Life this year. Click here for a history of the National Panhellenic Conference.
Our Creed outlines our ideals and goals that we have as Panhellenic women. Along with organizing Formal Recruitment which takes place mid to late September, we have information sessions during the year on topics like alcohol awareness and women's health. Community service projects are also held as well. If you are interested in finding out more about Greek life, click here to find out more......

Closed U of M Member Groups

The University of Manitoba has a long history of women's fraternities. Unfortunately, different social climates and fraternity perceptions have led to many groups to surrender their charters to their Headquarters.  Most of these groups have active alumnae chapters in Winnipeg, and help during Formal Recruitment.

Without the dedicated spirit of these women to bring a lifetime of sisterhood to Winnipeg, our women's fraternities would not be possible today. As we celebrate 75 years of sisterhood at U of M, we salute our pioneering sisters, and thank them for their love of sisterhood and development for all. (In order of chartering)

History of the National Panhellenic Conference

In the late 1890's, many different sororities were being set up , and several had "agreements" in working together, however, no actual Panhellenic organization existed and no uniform practices were observed. By 1902, it was obvious that some standards were needed, so Alpha Phi invited Pi Beta Phi, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Delta Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta, Delta Delta Delta, Alpha Chi Omega and Chi Omega to a conference in Chicago on May 24. The session resulted in the organization of the first inter-fraternity association and the first inter-group organization on college campuses. (National Inter-fraternity Conference for men's fraternities was organized in 1909, and is now called the North-American Inter-fraternity Conference).

This meeting, and the next few, resulted in several mutual agreements, especially regarding pledging. Up to this time, no guidelines had been set, and women could be pledged to groups before enrolling in college and, indeed, even belong to more than one group. Today, there are 26 member groups work together to support and build Greek life for women at 2,937 chapters at 629 campuses, plus alumnae chapters across Canada and the United States

The fact that NPC is a "Conference" is significant to the NPC philosophy because the organization is a conference, not a congress. It enacts no legislation except for the conduct of its own meetings. Other than the basic UNANIMOUS AGREEMENTS which all groups have voted to observe, NPC confines itself to recommendations and advice, and acts as a court of final appeal in any College Panhellenic difficulty. One of its greatest services is providing Area Advisors for College Panhellenics and Alumnae Panhellenics
